In a recent study it was reported that listening to degrading music increased sexual behavior among youth. The researchers picked a group of teens and asked them the types of music they listened to over the past few months. From the groups of artists given, the researchers then judged whether the music was degrading in sexual nature. They found that teens who listened to “degrading music” were more likely to have engaged in sexual behavior at the two follow up interviews. I have a mixed response to this. On one hand I think that teen sex is natural as long as they are safe. On the other there is the increase in teen pregnancy, which is a definite concern.
Sex is a natural part of life and there is no right age to begin having it. It is ultimately each persons decision wither or not to engage in sex. It is the job of parents and the school system to instill knowledge of the consequences of unsafe sex. Schools need to get rid of the abstinence based sex teaching, since in reality, the majority of seniors in high school have had sex (Degrading music study). A more liberal approach would relate to the students are more likely have a bigger effect.
Teen pregnancy is a concern of many parents within the United States. With shows such as “Teen Mom” and “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” some feel as if teen pregnancy is being glorified. An increase in sexual behavior would definitely lead to an increase of children by teen mothers. This is why the approach stated above should be implemented. It is ridiculous to think that teens are going to decrease sexual activity, they must be instead taught to perform it in a way that is safe for themselves and their partner.
