While researching topics for a podcast, I decided to go with surfing in Santa Barbara. Since already researching the topic, blogging about surf spots in SB was a obvious choice. I collected data on the different surf spots using various websites such as Wannasurf.com and Surfline.com.
The first spot that is a must surf in Santa Barbara is Rincon Point. It is easily accessible by taking the 101 south until the Rincon exit. The waves here are some of the best in the area, with very experienced surfers here. Weekdays are the best time to surf here, since it draws a very big weekend crowd. Going during the week does not guarantee that there will be open waves, this is one of the most popular places to surf in SB. As put by Wannasurf.com “[there are] nice people if you’re nice, don’t hog the waves and learn your surf etiquette before surfing here.”
Another notable surf spot in Santa Barbara is Sandspit. Located just by the Santa Barbara Harbor, it is just a short walk from parking. Swells here start working at around 3 feet and can hold up to over 16 feet. The experience of the surfers here is much like that of Rincon Point, drawing the best surfers around. It is probably recommended that unexperienced surfers do not surf here unless they have very good surf etiquette. Sandspit gets “ultra crowded,” on the weekends as put by Wannasurf.com, so it would be the best to go on a weekday. The risk of riptides and undertow also makes this a spot for the more experienced surfers.
These are only two of the many surf spots in the greater Santa Barbara area. For any experience type there is a place around where you will be welcome. Researching for this project has really helped to solidify my knowledge of the Santa Barbara surf scene.
